Academic Dismissal
At Mizzou, academic dismissal is the final level of academic standing and occurs when a student on academic warning does not achieve both a 2.0 term GPA and a 2.0 cumulative (UM) GPA in their next term of enrollment. This determination follows the university’s Academic Standing Policy (which defines the four levels- Good Standing, Academic Notice, Academic Warning and Academic Dismissal), and it serves as the starting point for any dismissal appeal consideration.
Dismissal Appeals
Students placed on academic dismissal for the first time may submit an appeal immediately following the semester of dismissal to request reinstatement for the next term.
When you prepare your appeal, expect to include:
- An explanation of the circumstances that led to your academic difficulties (address all semesters below a 2.0 GPA).
- Reflection of what you learned from those challenges and the specific steps you’ve already taken to address them.
- A clear success plan detailing what will be different next term and how you’ll ensure sustained academic progress (resources you’ll use, routines, supports, etc.).
Dismissal appeal submission instructions and links are available on the University Registrar’s Academic Standing page. You can also connect with your academic advisor for guidance on preparing a strong appeal.
