Declare Your Major

Understanding the Process

The steps for officially declaring a major vary by academic unit. The overview below explains the general process, but always check with your academic advisor or advising office for details specific to your program.

Why Declaring Your Major Matters

When you applied to Mizzou, you selected a major, indicated an intended major or chose to be Exploring. That information is recorded in the university system (myZou) and influences several parts of your academic experience:

Advisor Assignment

Your advisor is assigned based on your declared or intended major.

Targeted Communication

Emails and announcements about workshops, internships and other information are tailored to your field of study.

Tracking Degree Progress

The tools and support used to monitor your progress toward graduation are linked to your declared major. If your interests or goals change, it’s important to update your major so you receive the right advising and guidance.

Official or Unofficial Declaration

Even if your student record lists you under a certain major (for example, Personal Financial Planning or Physics), you may still need to complete additional steps before you are formally admitted into that major and officially recognized as a degree candidate.

Because the process varies by academic unit, your advisor can guide you through the requirements.

How to Officially Declare Your Major

Steps differ widely by school or college, but most students will need to:

  • Consult Your Advisor. Talk with your academic advisor to learn the requirements and expectations for declaring your major.
  • Review Degree Program Requirements:  Use the Undergraduate Catalog and Degree Audit to understand what is required for official admission to the major.
  • Complete Required Steps: Some majors require completing specific courses, earning certain grades, submitting an application or meeting GPA or credit-hour benchmarks.

When to Declare Your Major

Some academic units allow you to officially declare your major as soon as you arrive at Mizzou. Others require you to begin as “undeclared” and complete certain prerequisites or credit hours before declaring officially. Most academic units require you to officially declare by your junior year. If you wait too long, you may receive a registration hold that prevents you from enrolling in classes.
