Changing your major at Mizzou depends on your student type and timing. Campus-based and online students follow different processes, and procedures also differ for new versus continuing students. Once classes start, all students use a separate process. Understanding terms like “program,” “plan” and “sub-plan” can also help make the steps clearer.
For New Students
- How to Request a Change: Use the Application Status Page to access the Major Change Request form. This option is available from the moment you’re admitted until the Friday before classes start.
- Need Help? If you have any issues with the form, email the Admissions team at mizzouapp@missouri.edu.
- During Summer or Winter Welcome: You can also discuss and submit your major change through your academic advisor during your advising appointment. However, using the Major Change Request form in the Application Status Page is preferred.
Once Your First Classes Begin (All Students)
- If you’re switching majors to a different school or college, submit the online Change of Major Request form for current students.
- If you’re changing within the same school or college, schedule an appointment with your academic advisor to make the change.
Understanding University Terminology
- Program (Division): This refers to your school or college, like the College of Engineering or School of Journalism.
- Plan (Major): This is your degree focus for a major, minor or certificate, like Business Administration (major), Criminology/Criminal & Juvenile Justice (minor) or Global Supply Change Management (certificate).
- Sub-plan (Emphasis): This specifies your focus within a major, like Marketing (in Business Administration) or Health & Wellness Services (in Health Sciences).
