University Structure
To fully take advantage of what MU has to offer you and to avoid mistakes (taking a class that doesn't meet the requirement you think it will) and missed opportunities (not going to a lecture by the Nobel Prize winner in your area of specialization), you must understand how the University works and how you fit into that structure.
The courses you take while enrolled at MU as an undergraduate will be governed, listed in increasing degrees of specialization by University, academic unit, degree program, major and minor requirements. In some cases, courses taken to meet one set of requirements might also meet other requirements. This is not true of all requirements. Similarly, the specific courses used to meet one set of academic unit or degree program requirements will not necessarily work for the same requirements in a different academic unit.
This Web site and the Undergraduate Catalog will help you navigate the bureaucracy that is the University. These are not a replacement for individual discussions with your academic advisor.
Schools and Colleges
The University is composed of schools and colleges (also called academic units or divisions). Some of these offer undergraduate degrees, others (for example, Medical School) do not. Undergraduate degree-seeking students must be enrolled on one of the undergraduate schools or colleges.
