Changing Advisors

There are many reasons why you might want or need to change your advisor:

  • You might have changed majors and need an advisor in a new department.
  • You might have an advisor with a style so different from your own that you find it hard to communicate effectively.
  • Your advisor might be on research leave and unavailable for a semester or a year.
  • You might have thought you changed advisors but that change isn't reflected in the student database (because someone forgot to enter it).

Whatever the reason, changing advisors is not all that difficult. You should contact the central Academic Advising Office in the School or College in which you are enrolled. Staff there will either be able to assign you to a new advisor or refer you to the person in the department who can make the change.

If you are dissatisfied with your advisor, you will probably be asked for specifics. If students aren't getting what they need from the resources available, resources need to be changed. That will only happen when the proper administrators are aware of your concerns.
